Martial Arts and misconceptions are happening every minute of
the Day in every Dojo / Gym in the World.
What do you mean I hear you shout?
Our Gym / Dojo is a real
fighters gym, we have no mis-conceptions here, we wear lycra
shorts and get in the ring, we know what we do works.
What do you mean I hear you shout?
We are an RBSD Gym, we hit
Bob’s in our Garages and wear Combat Trousers just like the
Army, we know what works on those mean streets.
What do you mean I hear you shout?
Insert your art here, insert
what you wear here, insert you know what works here. For TMA
insert your no of years training here.
Go out dressed like that and you will be trying to prove what
you do works!
Everyone is so into “what we do works” or “this is battle
proven” or “your stuff would not work as well as mine against a
REAL attack” or “your art is no good against a real attack” or
“your art is no good against MULTIPLE Attackers
Wake up and smell the coffee guys… it does not matter what art
you do when the proverbial hits the fan.
What matters is how you
react.
You could be training in the World’s most deadly system,
know it inside out, BUT when it comes down to it, you hate
fighting, you hate the sensations you feel and you crumble under
the pressure of those “feelings”.
Does that make what you train
worthless? NO, of course not. It merely means that you are not
the “type” of person to get into those situations.
Don’t worry about what art you are doing, if you are enjoying
it, then FANTASTIC, carry on enjoying it.
Only if you are learning for a specific purpose should you be
worried about the “effectiveness” of what you are doing.
If you like the “tradition” of your art then wear Pyjamas and
play that game.
If you like pretending to be a Soldier, then
wear Combats and play that game. If you like to play at all
round fighting then wear lycra and do that.
The point is… that everyone keeps going on about what does and
does not work… when they are missing out on the fundamental
answer, it is the person that matters most, not the art.
Let’s face facts here… almost everyone in their life will have
had an occasional scuffle or fight at School, then “maybe” if
they are dumb enough, an occasional scuffle or fight in
adulthood and “maybe” if they are REALLY DUMB, lot’s of fights
or scuffles as an adult.
The odds of being attacked are low. The odds of being attacked
and badly injured are even lower. Yes, I know we all hear the
horror stories, we all hear the “killings” on the mean streets
of insert latest tough guys town here.
The fact still remains that if you are “switched on” and utilise
proper awareness and avoidance, then the odds of being attacked
are so low they are hardly measureable.
So, with that in mind, enjoy your training, enjoy your art.
Who
is anyone to tell you that their way is best or that you should
change to what they do?
If you want to improve what you are doing then that is
DIFFERENT, then you MUST seek out further knowledge, you MUST
push yourself to higher goals and limits.
If you are a fighter, then you MUST push yourself to the limits
of ALL aspects of your training.
If you change direction in what you want from the martial Arts,
then of course, you must seek out further knowledge and guidance
in those areas.
The best way is to have a healthy attitude to your art / sport /
recreation / pastime / sd etc and to ENJOY it. It does not
matter what anyone else thinks or says about what you do. What
matters most, is that YOU enjoy it and that YOU are happy with
it.
Over the last too many years I have taught Seminars / Courses
etc all over the World. Organisations have been and in fact
still are worried, that I am trying to “steal” their students.
Heck, some organisations have even banned their students from
meeting me, let alone training with me!
Their “misconception” is that I am trying to convert “their”
students to become “my” students. NOTHING could be further from
the truth. I am giving out information, to help those
individuals get better at what they do.
Some Organisations have had the foresight to appreciate this and
now I consult on a regular basis for them in the construction of
Black Belt Syllabus, Training and Courses.
Their student
retention has risen dramatically as a result. The complete
opposite effect of what other organisations are afraid of!
I am sure that in you own Gyms / Dojo’s etc that you can find
and see almost on a daily basis, various mis-conceptions.
